Nepalese women

In Nepal with 27,000,000 inhabitants, 70% of the population lives in abject poverty. Major reason behind this is the political instability and undemocratic rule for long. Other crucial factors for being the country very poor are due to lack of awareness and access to quality education.

The citizens of the country  experience  a permanent crisis;  this  mostly  affects  women, who bear the whole burden of the family, raising children, caring for the elderly and contributing to the family  income by engaging in flexible forms of labour.

A Nepalese government survey in 2011 showed that 22% of women ages 15 to 49 had experienced physical violence, and 12% had experienced sexual violence at least once.

Among married women, one-third had experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence from their spouse in their marital relationship, according to Nepal’s ministry of health and population.

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, leveling entire villages and bringing destruction and devastation. Less than three weeks later, another 7.3-magnitude quake shook the country.

The chaos that followed the earthquake affected adolescent girls and women immensely. While everyone was impacted by the natural disaster, the female Nepalese population faced immediate problems of security, sexual violence, and no access to menstrual products.

Did you know that Nepal is the only country in the world where Women's life expectancy is shorter than men?

Throughout the Himalayas, most people in villages do not have piped in water but must rely for household use on public roadside taps from springs.
